ResumoIn this work,Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene(UHMWPE)samples were treated by Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation in di®erent conditions of pulse intensity (15, 30, 45 and 70 kV) and treatment time (60, 120 and 180 min). In all cases, a high voltage pulser based on Blumlein technology was used. All treatments were mesh-assisted to assure implantation without charging of the samples and to permit the insulating polymer to be ion implanted with to the negative pulses applied to the mesh. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelec- tron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to evaluate surface modi¯cation in terms of Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) formation and chemical composition, respectively. The results showed that DLC formation is directly related to the pulse intensity and treatment time with an upper limit for ion energy. For a certain combination of high energetic ions and longer treatment times the polymer surface gets burned and no DLC characteristic Raman scattering could be observed. XPS results demonstrated that implanted nitrogen ions are probably linked to carbon atoms instead of forming clusters. With the Blumlein technology, it was possible to have pulses with only 1,5 microseconds duration which allowed the UHMWPE to be submitted to high pulse intensities and treatment times without the deleterious problems associated with polymer heating.
